Domaine Benjamin & David Duclaux 'La Germine' Côte-Rôtie 2007

Tell A Friend  Tell A Friend

Variety: Syrah / Shiraz
Winery:
Vintage: 2007

After tasting through the wonderful line up of grower/producers represented at the Ampuis Growers Festival this year there were a number of standouts which included the Duclaux Domaine!!  With Benjamin and David now at the helm this Domaine has continued to evolve and improve. We first imported the 2000 vintage and the promise at that time has more than been fulfilled with the quality of wine being produced today. Now surely one of Cote Rotie’s finest producers.

Created in 1928, Domaine Benjamin & David Duclaux represents the fourth generation of winegrowers. The 14 acre vineyards of Domain Duclaux are entirely situated in Tupin et Semons and in the southern sector of Côte-Rôtie. Incredibly age worthy and brilliant value reds, they remain one of the undiscovered stars of Côte Rôtie

Made from 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier from 30 year old estate grown vines.

A domaine on the move under the impulse of the two brothers. They have tidied up the winemaking, and moved into site-specific wines. Their vineyards are southern zone, rendering them softer and more graciously red-fruited than the tighter, more mineral wines of the north. A promising name. – John Livingstone-Learmonth

Tasting Note:

95% Syrah, 5% Viognier, from southern zone, destemmed, 3-week vinification, aged 20% new, 80% 1-4 year casks 20-22 months, unfiltered, first wine 2006

A concentrated spice ripe fruit nose with some earthy overtones. The palate has lovely purity of ripe raspberry fruit. Concentrated with fine balance. A long finish. A really attractive wine. (Jon Osbeiston – Ultimo Wine Centre – 90+ points)

(casks) dark robe; cautious nose, with suggestion of steady evolution – has an inlay of black fruit, violet, a little damp leaf and smoke: has the potential to vary well. Black fruits with a menthol, minted thread lead the palate, and show the vintage`s clarity – they move with a nice rhythm. There is a good ensemble of fruit, tannin and matter. This ends on the vintage mineral note. Holds a welcome dimension in this sometimes uneven year, is full and quite punchy. Length is OK. From late 2010. (John Livingstone-Learmonth – Drink Rhone – 3-4 stars)

The 2007 Cote Rôtie La Germine offers up lovely aromas of bacon fat, spring flowers, sweet raspberries and black cherries, camphor, and forest floor. Long, lush, supple-textured, and sensual, it should drink beautifully for at least a decade. (Robert Parker – Wine Advocate #181 –89-91 points)
